When in Japan, do as the Japanese do – ski. And when not skiing, learn how to make sushi.

Classes in the traditional cuisine provide a delicious and educational diversion when you’re taking a break from the slopes.

Skiing shouldn’t be the only memory you take home from a country with such a rich culture.

I took a three-hour sushi class at the Niseko Cultural School, in Japan’s top ski resort in the northern island of Hokkaido.

I learned how to make seven types of sushi, without losing any finger parts, and the results were astonishingly good for someone challenged at home by making shepherd’s pie.

You can also take classes in bamboo ink painting, calligraphy, tea ceremonies and kimono dressing, and there are tours to Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples and historical sites.

Snowmobiling trips are another great way to explore the surrounding countryside.

AFP – A spat over disputed islands has put a damper on Chinese sales of Japanese products from cars to cosmetics, but there is relief in one market at a fall-off of foreign buyers — real estate.

The chance to own land in Japan’s beautiful mountain wilderness of Hokkaido has proved a real draw for moneyed Chinese, but there are local fears over what some see as a land grab targeting forests and water sources.

The backlash started in 2010, when a Chinese woman was quoted by local media as saying: “What’s arresting about Japanese land is that it has water.”

Broadcasters jumped on the issue, running stories that talked of how Chinese money was “targeting Japanese water” and buyers were “trying to conquer Hokkaido.”

The reports left locals nervous amid much talk of land being appropriated by potentially hostile foreigners.

Niseko: A unique piste in the East – The Independent

9th November

On the same latitude as the North Korean/ Russian border and a world away from Alpine cheese and chintz, Niseko has a mountain aesthetic all of its own. Skiing in Japan is not just a pretty picture. Use the long flight to Sapporo via Tokyo to meditate on this: cold weather descends from Russia, picks up moisture over the Sea of Japan, and falls as feather-light powder. The hotel’s best asset is its ski-from-the-door location, into the 48km of pistes and 30 lifts that connect the areas of Niseko, Grand Hirafu and Annupuri. But for its traditional outdoor baths … Read More »
