I promise the patrolmen, who warn of frequent avalanches, that I’ll navigate my way slowly and carefully through the legendary Mizuno no Sawa (literally “water field of the gully”), an area deemed too dangerous to attempt until last season.

It may sound reckless but the truth is I’m hooked on white powder. This new addiction is irresistible once you’re exposed to the best stuff here on the northern island of Hokkaido.

I edge my tips down into Mizuno no Sawa, immediately lose sight of my skis, boots then salopettes, float through the white paradise and whoop with joy at being lucky enough to experience one of life’s rarest thrills.

Fast becoming a mecca for powder junkies, when it snows here, it dumps. Coming in from Siberia in colossal nocturnal drifts, it leaves light, fluffy heaps and hangs in the picturesque “mushroom trees”. It … Read More »

11th December

A sauna, in fact, along with a deep-tissue massage, is the perfect post-ski activity, according to the pros, as it helps reduce the onset of muscle soreness. Combining your skiing holiday with a spa one is also a trend, and is more than just about off-piste pampering. So, where to go? In Europe, we’d recommend The Cambrian. A member of Design Hotels, it’s nestled in the Swiss Alps, with easy access to 210 kilometres of pistes and has an indoor pool and a 750-metre spa area, including a Finnish sauna. Seven nights here in January 2013 start from Dh11,600 for two (www.designhotels.com). Or, try the five-star eco resort Residence & Spa Vallorcine, just 15 kilometres from Chamonix Mont-Blanc, where you can ski, skate or dog-sledge in the morning (there’s plenty of white stuff until the end of April) and relax … Read More »

7th December

The current exchange rate between the Australian dollar and the Japanese Yen has led to a reduction in cost of SkiJapan.com packages to Niseko the most popular Japanese winter resort in Hokkaido.

Marcus Williams SkiJapan.com’s MD said: “There has been quite a fluctuation between the two currencies in the last 12 months and anyone who books now can take advantage of the best rate since July last year.”

Another incentive to holiday in March (aside from the cost) at Niseko is Kids aged 12 and under Ski Free!

Also the cost of flying to Sapporo, the closest international airport to Niseko, throughout March is less. Airline seats are considerably lower on the numerous airlines that fly via Tokyo, Hong Kong or Seoul, to the New … Read More »

Mr. Lowater said he paid 12 million yen (about $146,000, by current rates) for the land in 2006. He hired Sekka Style, a Sapporo-based architectural firm and builder, for the project. Construction began in 2007, and the home was completed just before the 2008 ski season, Mr. Lowater said. Photo: Niseko Alpine Developments

The modern exterior is made of cedar, galvanized steel and concrete. ‘Our goal was to create a solid structure that could stand up to the elements and stand the test of time with regards to the ever-changing world of home design,’ said Shouya … Read More »
