A short run on a long slope – The Nation

27th August

The sky is getting dark and through the window of the Greenleaf Niseko Village, I can see thousands of snowflakes being buffeted around by the strong wind. Sipping a fine draft Sapporo beer, I ask my table companion, a lovely lady by the name of Noriko Sakaki, if she thinks and Yuki Onna will be dropping by tonight.

Yuki Onna is a Snow Lady – or a snow spirit. Like a nymph in Greek mythology or “nang mai” in Thai folklore, Yuki Onna loves to fool a man – not necessarily a good-looking man – who loses his way on a snowy night.

“She appears on snowy nights as a tall, beautiful woman with long black hair,” says Noriko, who is probably wondering why I want to speak of such an evil spirit on this particular snowy night.

“She would seduce a … Read More »

Gap year case study: training to be a ski instructor – Telegraph.co.uk

12th August

We got to ski with some of the racers who train in Tignes in October and every
Friday was a race day so we could take part and get tips from Snoworks’ Emma
Carrick-Anderson, a four-times Olympic skier. My skiing ability improved so
much in eight weeks it was unbelievable.

The first qualification we trained for was BASI level 1 in Zermatt. We had to
study in the evening and plan a lesson but we felt so well prepared it was
fine. We went to Courchevel for level 2, which was quite a step up – a
two-week course.

After qualifying I had thought I would go to Europe for the season but some
people on the course were going to Japan. I had heard good things about it
so seven of us ended … Read More »

Japan: A hot bath and powder – New Zealand Herald

12th August

Kieran Nash enjoys an authentic experience at Japan’s oldest ski resort

Of all the places to pass out naked, most people wouldn’t choose a wet tile floor surrounded by drunken Swedes. But that’s what I was about to do. I was in a small bathroom, hazy and thick with steam, strewn with cans of Asahi beer.

However, this particular bathroom was actually a traditional Japanese hot spring called an onsen, buried in the basement of a quaint guesthouse about three hours’ train ride north of Tokyo, in a small ski town called Myoko Kogen.

And while I was in the village to go snowboarding, at that present moment I was also doing my best keep a tight grip on my consciousness.

After a hard day ploughing through the mountain’s fine powder, I found my room did not have a shower (just a friendly … Read More »

PHUKET: The daily wrap of Thailand news, with a Phuket perspective, plus relevant reports from national and international media. Beware of inconsistent imitations.

Futuristic Luna2 Hotel to Open in Bali – Fodor’s Travel

Posted by Google News Archive in Niseko News. Comments Off on Futuristic Luna2 Hotel to Open in Bali – Fodor’s Travel

7th August

Bali has long been known for its throwback tropical seduction but with the September opening of Luna2 Studios the island is poised to attract jetsetters in search of design, fashion, luxury, and the ultra-hip.

Melanie Hall—owner of the brand-new 14-suite hotel in Seminyak and the daughter of an architect who introduced her to modern design during the 1950s and 1960s—merged nostalgia with futurism in every nook and cranny. Inspired by the primary-color palettes that exist in Lego bricks, Monopoly game boards, Rubik’s cubes, and works by Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, the hotel is just a short walk from the beach and a 20-minute drive to the airport. Named for the first spacecraft to land on the moon, during the 1950s, there’s a nod to cosmic spaces throughout. In another nod to futurism, an environmental ethos includes using green cleaning products, low-voltage … Read More »
