10th July

SAPPORO — Hokkaido Railway Co. (JR Hokkaido) is set to abolish three of its popular steam trains after this year to prioritize its safety measures following a series of accidents and other problems.

JR Hokkaido President Osamu Shimada made the announcement at a regular news conference on July 9.

The company will abolish the “Hakodate Onuma” train it operates between Hakodate and Mori in spring and summer, the “Niseko” train between Sapporo and Rankoshi in autumn and the “Hakodate Christmas Fantasy” between Hakodate and Onuma-Koen in December — all on the Hakodate Line.

However, JR Hokkaido will continue operating the “Fuyu-no-Shitsugen” (“Winter Swamp”) between Kushiro and Shibecha on the Senmo Line in the season of drift ice on the Sea of Okhotsk beyond next year in an effort to hand over skills of operating and servicing steam locomotives to future generations.

JR Hokkaido has … Read More »

2nd July

We used to pick a hotel for its central location, the size of its room, sweet view or sexy pool. Not any more.

These days, travellers are deciding where to sleep based on their stomachs — that is, how awesome the hotel restaurants and bars are. Take lawyer Lim Hui Nan, for example. She checked into Portland’s Hotel Monaco just so she could dine at the Red Star Tavern & Roast House; London’s Town Hall Hotel for its renowned Corner Room; Penang’s Macalister Mansion for the offerings at the whisky bar The Den; and Kuala Lumpur’s Majestic for The Smoke House, which claims to serve “exceptional vintage cocktails and a connoisseur’s collection of single malt whiskies”.

Similarly, analyst Leonard Foo once stayed in three different hotels in Thailand on a week-long holiday just because he wanted … Read More »
