John and Tina Smith purchased this home in 2007. It’s a three-minute drive from Annupuri, one of six ski areas around the town of Niseko. The Annupuri gondola takes skiers to an intermountain station for easy access to other nearby slopes. Photo: Hokkaido Real Estate

When the Smiths purchased the property, it was the Ebina Hotel — a boutique hotel with seven guest rooms that catered to skiers. It’s about a two-hour drive from Sapporo. Photo: Hokkaido Real Estate

Mr. Smith says that the home’s original ‘workmanship is unbelievable.’ During the home’s initial renovation, he replaced all the wallpaper and curtains. Photo: Hokkaido Real Estate

This traditional Japanese onsen, or hot-spring bath, was a major component of a subsequent renovation project. Creating the onsen required a nearly 2,500-foot dig to hit the natural hot-spring water beneath the property. The water gets as hot as 50 degrees Celsius (or 122 degrees Fahrenheit), Mr. Smith says, ‘and we cool it down to 40. [It’s] great in the morning and in the afternoon after a ski.’ Photo: Hokkaido Real Estate

‘The property has three generous bedrooms,’ Mr. Smith says. The master bedroom is shown here. Photo: Hokkaido Real Estate

The property is in a suburb of Niseko, a rapidly growing ski town in Japan. It’s a 20-minute drive from the city center, where most of the hotels are located. Photo: Hokkaido Real Estate

Mr. Smith purchased an adjacent 32,000-square-foot lot in 2007 to ensure privacy around the home. It includes a tennis court and barbecue pit. The price for the lot — which isn’t included in the price for the home — is negotiable. Photo: Hokkaido Real Estate

‘This home is for someone who wants to be discreet and not in downtown with 5,000 people,’ Mr. Smith says. ‘We have access to all the areas, but it is a very exclusive hideaway.’ Photo: Hokkaido Real Estate

The 9,687-square-foot home has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and is listed for $2.4 million with Jason King of Hokkaido Real Estate. Photo: Hokkaido Real Estate
